Moving from Dropbox to Owncloud

I’ve been a more or less happy Dropbox user for some years now. I upgraded to a Pro 50 plan about a year ago and from an usability standpoint, everything worked great. But having all my data on public servers in de the US. Hmm, not totally satisfied with that. At the time I did not know of any real alternatives and stuck with dropbox.

owncloud-logo-squareA couple of weeks ago I learned about OwnCloud. A service that works more or less like dropbox, but you can host it on any server capable of running PHP and some libraries / extensions. I took it for a small pilot run and really liked what I saw. So now I’m moving al my data over and will start the really use it for some time.

The dropbox pro account expires in February, so I will have enough time to find issues or nice features in OwnCloud. Looking fine sofar 🙂 And the Dropbox account will stay around to share folders with other dropbox users.

Update 28-DEC-2012: Alas, the syncing of 20GB+ data between 2 clients and the server just took forever. After my SO started complaining she could not find some of here data I terminated the trial and moved everything back to Dropbox.
