Home computing goals for 2025

Looking at my list I wrote last January, things did not turn out quite as planned. Apple TV is still king, the nas was not replaced and home assistant use has increased somewhat, but nothing spectacular. Never mind, we did buy another house and moved in. That ofcourse, took quite some time and effort. It also meant rebuilding the home network, which was nice.
One of the things that did materialize is 2 Gbs fiber Internet, with limited 2.5 Gbe connectivity in the home network. It was nice to test and utilize, but it is overkill. So the line will be back to a 1 Gbps cap in a couple of weeks, saving a nice amount of money.
The homelab mostly stayed the homelab, with both the Synology and the Tuxedo desktop running Proxmox at the heart of it. The biggest change here is utilising ZFS in a lot of extra places, adding ZFS snapshot based offsite backups. Highly recommended.
So, things that were done were not at all planned. But they were very nice things to work on in any case.
What is in store for 2025
Given that predictions are just that, I do have a couple of plans for 2025:
- Moving to Red Hat Enterprise Linux as a desktop for my Slimbook laptop. RHEL9 was already installed this week, but tuning everything to make it a really productive machine will take some time and effort.
- Adding Openshift Single Node (OSN) to the homelab. For now, I added a big VM to my proxmox setup to run openshift. But if I like it enough, it will warrant a dedicated machine somewhere in 2025.
- Keep on fiddling with random stuff, including but not limited to:
- OpenBSD
- OPNsense
- Rasberry Pi
- python scripting
What will most likely disappear
My view on social media has for a long time been that I was not a fan of most of the technical solutions, but they were somewhat valuable in delivering snippets/news from people that I would like to be updated on. Friends, family, BSD nerds, and so on.
But for me, over time, the signal to noise ratio has gotten worse and worse. So one of my goals for 2025 is to spend significantly less time on social media. My Insta and Facebook accounts are currently in the soft delete stadium and should be removed by the end of next month. My Fediverse accounts will not be removed, but I will try to refrain from using them.
Instead I will trying to use more rss/blogs/email or actual face-to-face contact to keep in touch with everybody.
So if we used to interact on any social platform, please get in touch, so we can continue to interact.
Untill next time!
